McDonald’s will be greeting runners at this weekend’s Chicago Marathon with something to help get over cramping: pickle juice.

The fast-food giant is bottling the brine from its pickles for “runners, spectators, and pickle lovers” in Chicago from Friday through race day on Sunday.

Runners will be able to get “Pickle Boost” across the city and along the race route “while supplies last.”

On Friday, the company will bring Pickle Boost to the Lakefront Trail from 7 a.m. through 1 p.m. CT.

Select McDonald’s restaurants around Chicago will give out two bottles to runners and spectators alike from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The locations are:

  • 2635 N. Clark St.

  • 1563 N. Wells St.

  • 600 N. Clark St.

  • 203 N. LaSalle St.

  • 207 E. 35th St.

According to at least one study, drinking a small amount of pickle juice can do a better job than water at relieving muscle cramps. Another study, however, found “no evidence” to suggest pickle juice helps with cramping.

Nevertheless, the possibility that pickle juice could help with cramping, along with consumer interest in pickles and pickle-flavored products, has fueled plenty of product development.

At least the pickle juice isn’t going to waste.
