Papa Johns’ The Works pizzaPapa Johns

Papa Johns is promoting its seven-topping pizza at a discounted price starting on Wednesday, apparently as part of its continuing attempt to reverse declining sales.

The Works is topped with pepperoni, julienne-cut Canadian bacon, spicy Italian sausage, onions, green peppers, mushrooms, and black olives, all covered with a layer of mozzarella cheese “to lock in flavor to deliver the perfect balance of taste and texture to the very last crumb,” as a publicist described it in an email. It’s part of the chain’s Handcrafted Specialty Pizzas line and is priced starting at $10.99 for a medium, down from the usual $17.69, and $13.99 for a large, down from $20.99.

The discount is timed to coincide with the current fall entertaining season, including game-day watch parties and other social gatherings, according to a company release.

It also comes as Papa Johns, which operates some 3,400 restaurants in North America and 6,000 globally, continues to battle sales declines.

For the most recent quarter, ended June 28, domestic same-store sales were down 8.9% and global same-store sales were down 8.3%.

Papa Johns has also been introducing new menu items to attract customers, including the Ultimate Pepperoni Pizza, rolled out earlier this month. It has 30% more pepperoni than a regular pie and is priced starting at $12.99 for a large.

In March, the brand rolled out a line of Oven-Toasted Sandwiches on ciabatta-style bread initially priced at $7.99, although they’re now $9.99, according to the chain’s website.
