Hai Hospitality, which operates 10 locations of Tyson Cole’s Japanese concept Uchi, has signed a lease to open an 11th one next year, in the Fort Point neighborhood of Boston.
The 7,100-square-foot space is at 374 Congress Street and will seat 210 guests, including 11 at the sushi counter, 17 at the bar, and 26 in a private dining room that will be able to be divided in two. The landlord is Eastern Real Estate.
Austin, Texas-based Hai Hospitality has hired design firm Islyn Studio to develop the interior. It also designed the Washington, D.C., location of Uchi and the Miami location of sister concept Uchiko.
Corgan Associates is the architect of record.
Hai said the design is inspired by the concept of a seaside antique shop with Colonial architecture and “vintage Japanese-inspired craftsmanship,” intended to reflect both New England’s history and Uchi’s Japanese heritage.
“We chose Fort Point because we wanted a neighborhood that reflects Boston’s rich history: its nautical roots as one of early America’s most important ports, and its role as the gateway to New England,” Hai Hospitality Chief Development Officer Todd Reppert said in a statement.
The restaurant is slated to open in late 2027.
Hai CEO Tony Montero said the move was part of broader expansion plans in the region.
“We’ve been looking to grow our presence in the Northeast, and Boston’s culture, community and appreciation for diverse culinary perspectives drew our attention,” he said in a statement. “Boston’s strong fundamentals make it a natural next step for Uchi.”
Apart from fine-dining Uchi, the group also operates five live fire-focused Uchiko restaurants, two Uchiba locations, which are more cocktail-oriented, Omakase tasting room Oheya in Houston, and Loro, a three-unit Asian smokehouse concept.
