Filmmaker Oliver English Believes Behind Every Meal, There’s a Story

It begins in the soil, in the field, and in the hands of the farmers and ranchers who feed us.

Filmmaker and chef Oliver English has built his work around telling these stories. His deep appreciation for regenerative agriculture and farm-to-table cuisine led to his documentary Feeding Tomorrow and connected him to American Farmland Trust (AFT).

“Farmers are the backbone of America,” Oliver says. “And they’re often underappreciated or unseen.”

Oliver and his team at Common Table Creative are visiting farms across the United States, hearing how AFT’s farm viability grants, farmland protection efforts and research have helped farms survive and thrive. “It’s one thing to read about these programs on a website,” says Oliver. “It’s another thing entirely to sit at a farmer’s kitchen table and hear that a grant helped to keep their farm running, to protect their land from development, or to transition to more resilient practices.”

The stakes are real. “If we lose our farmland, there is no future,” Oliver says. The farmers who steward our farmland need advocates, resources, and people committed to the land that sustains us all. That’s what AFT does.

American Farmland Trust believes in thriving farms and ranches. AFT protects agricultural land, promotes environmentally sound farming practices, and keeps farmers on their land. It is the only national agricultural organization of its kind recognizing the connection between land, practices, and farmers. Because of AFT, millions of acres of farmland that otherwise would have been converted into house lots and shopping malls remain in farming, and tens of thousands of farmers and ranchers have adopted better farming practices.
