Subway taps into lunch regrets to give away Footlongs

Subway is giving away thousands of Footlong sandwiches to Americans with regrets.

The sandwich chain on Monday invited consumers to visit the website LunchtimeHorrors.com to “confess” their lunch regrets, including that “$20 smoothie that left you hungry. The $25 salad that wasn’t worth it. The greasy burger that weighed you down,” according to press materials.

Those who confess their lunch regrets through Oct. 16 have a chance to receive a $15 eGift card that can be used to purchase a Footlong. Visitors to the website are invited to join the loyalty program or make an order.

According to a Subway-commissioned survey, 66% of U.S. adults say they at least sometimes regret their lunch choice. The survey found that 34% said what they ate didn’t fill them up. Another 28% said it wasn’t worth what they paid. And 35% said they ate unhealthy food. An estimated 70% said they regularly skip lunch at least once a week.

The promotion is a continuation of the recent Feed Your SUBconscious marketing campaign in which actor and comedian Will Arnett serves as the “inner voice” steering consumers toward a freshly prepared sandwich at Subway.

Jeff Klein, Subway’s chief marketing officer, said in a statement, “We make sandwiches, not time machines. But we can give people something to look forward to at their next lunch. Feed Your SUBconscious is an invitation to listen to that inner voice that knows what you really want. This Halloween, we’re giving Americans a chance to act on it, with thousands of freshly prepared Footlongs on us.”
